McLeod family 'amazed' by TV psychics' findings
Published:  17 October, 2007
WICK man Hugh McLeod believes psychics could play a part in discovering exactly what happened the night his son Kevin died more than 10 years ago.
Mr McLeod was speaking after he and his wife June had taken part in a television programme featuring three prominent psychics which was screened on Thursday and repeated last night.
The couple were astonished by the trio's separate "readings" which they say add weight to their unwavering belief that their 24-year-old son was brutally beaten before he ended up in Wick harbour on February 8, 1997.
"Some of the things they came up with made the hair on the backs of our necks stand up," Mr McLeod said yesterday. "It's only afterwards that you realise how close they are – many of the things they came up with, they just couldn't have known about in advance."
He and the rest of his family hope the programme – Psychic Private Eyes, on the Zone Reality channel – can spur someone to come forward with information which they have so far kept to themselves.
Mr McLeod said they were happy to have taken part in the TV show.
"I have to say that I've had to eat my words about psychics," Mr McLeod said. "I've always been suspicious but, in our contact with them, I'm satisfied they are 100 per cent genuine.
"We were amazed with some of the things they came out with, including sections which did not go out on TV – they were just unreal."
The couple travelled to London for a session with T.J. Higgs, while Tony Stockwell met them at their home in Wick as well as going out in a boat in the town's harbour.
Colin Fry, meanwhile, carried out a psychometry – a form of extrasensory perception – using photographs and clothing belonging to Kevin.
Perhaps the most harrowing part for the couple was when Tony Stockwell hinted that there might have been a drugs connection in their son's death. He raised the spectre of a boat having gone to Wick with drugs, and packages having been removed from the boot of Kevin's car.
Mr McLeod said: "He [Tony Stockwell] warned us beforehand about what might come out but we both said that it doesn't matter what it is and just to put it to us. I don't think there's anything new that could cause us more pain than we have already gone through."
Mr McLeod said they had no reason to believe Kevin was involved in drugs, though some time after his death they discovered that one of the friends he had been out with on the fateful night had been a drugs courier.
The family believe there could have been a drugs link in the tragedy. "It could be a turning point in solving the case," Mr McLeod said.
By Monday, the programme had not produced any new calls to the family's solicitor but Mr McLeod was confident that it could prompt fresh leads.
He said: "It might take weeks or even a few months before someone's conscience is pricked – we're prepared to wait. The programme has certainly created quite a stir around the town."
Mr and Mrs McLeod, of Nicolson Street, will not rest until Kevin's killer is found.
"We know what person Kevin was and we know this wouldn't have happened to him of his own volition," Mr McLeod said. "Something untoward happened to him that night."
The McLeods have been battling with Northern Constabulary over its investigation of the death. The family accuse the force of having mounted successive cover-ups after botching the initial investigation.
Northern Constabulary insists that it can do no more after its two probes failed to find evidence of foul play.
The family's latest move has been to lodge a complaint with Scottish Police Complaints Commissioner Jim Martin. He is expected to report shortly.
Psychic Private Eyes also featured interviews with retired Strathclyde detective Les Brown, who has investigated the circumstances of Kevin's death, and with Caithness freelance journalist Iain Grant.
